The Coopers

Big John, the father

Big John wasn’t handsome and lived on a disability check, but he knew how to sweet talk a woman. He had five children that he knew about, two of them with Dorothy June, Angelique and Brittany. He had left Dorothy June when she had a child by another man. He had lived in the same county all of his life and had worked in the fireworks factory until he began having shoulder problems from working on the loading dock. Growing up, Angelique rarely saw him, but when she did his eyes were bloodshot, and he smelled like beer. He usually had a baseball cap pulled down over his face. His girlfriends would leave after he hit them, sometimes really hard.

Dorothy June, the mother

Dorothy June ran away from home after a fight with her stepfather when she was sixteen. She lived with Big John and was pregnant almost right away with Angelique. They married in the church down the road and had three children before Dorothy June was nineteen. At the time Big John was working in the factory. Angelique had her mother’s blue eyes. The blue of blue-eyed grass that only blooms for a week in the spring her useless mother would sing, on her sentimental drunk days, but most of her drinking days, her mother just screamed at her. Her mother thought she would write country and western songs and get rich. Probably still thinks so. Five years ago, her mother disappeared along with Brittany, Angelique’s sister. She skipped bail and they left the state. Dorothy June had been living with a meth head and had been arrested for endangering her daughter. Angelique’s Aunt Laura thinks they went to Nashville. But nobody has heard anything in five years.

Laura

Laura and Dorothy June grew up in a town where there wasn’t much to do and they moved around a lot. They had the same mother but different fathers. Laura was the pretty one. Her hair was a color people called caramel. Her hair was straight and swung around her face when she turned. Laura had gotten married right out of high school to a man ten years older than she was. He owned the liquor stores in two towns. They had a nice brick house close to the lake. They liked to go fishing together on Sundays. She had wished she could have had children. It was something about scar tissue. She said her sister was so lucky that way. Just popped out the babies with no trouble. She liked watching her nieces growing up. She would buy them gifts at Christmas and on their birthdays. One night somebody stuck a gun in her husband’s face and had robbed him at the liquor store. After that her husband had bought more guns and started going to the shooting range. One night after he had been drinking, he had gone a little crazy and tried to kill Aunt Laura. At least he had stuck a gun in her face the same way the robber did. He had wanted her to see what was bothering him. She had called the police. He had kept yelling he would never hurt her. But that had been it for her. She wasn’t staying around to see what would happen next. She had gone and gotten herself a job at the factory that made flags and found an apartment in a garage for herself.

Brittany

Brittany and Angelique are two years apart and grew up together until Brittany was 6 and Angelique was 8 when things really began to fall apart for Dorothy June. Since then she has mostly stayed with Dorothy June, while Angelique has been sent different places to live. Five years ago her mother took her in the middle of the night with a pillowcase of her clothes to the Greyhound bus station and they went south. Her mother told her to pick a new name so she is Tina Ann now and not a Cooper anymore. She didn’t have a birth certificate that said she was Tina Ann whatever, or a record of her shots so she couldn’t go to school anymore. Her mother says she teaches her at home but mostly they just watch television and her mother drinks whatever she can get her hands on. Right now they are living with a man named Ralph who seems to be okay. He is teaching Tina Ann to play chess but she can’t always remember which way each of the pieces move.

Friends

Jenny, the roommate

Jenny’s mother was supposed to get her back after a year and now she is mad that Angelique is leaving and she isn’t. Jenny isn’t talking to Angelique she is so mad. They have been roommates for more than a year. The town Jenny came from was about an hour away. Nothing happened anymore in that town. The school was closed. The factory was closed. There used to be a feed and seed store and a bar. There were two churches with graveyards. Her mother hadn’t had a job since the factory closed. Nobody knew where her father had gone. Jenny had a brother who was too old to be in the system. He said he was going to volunteer for the army and get a bonus if he passed the physical. Jenny thought he was stealing something. Maybe car parts. Maybe copper Her mother and her grandmother came sometimes on visiting days, every third Saturday. Jenny’s grandmother would just sit there shaking her head a lot and talked about everything Jenny’s mother was addicted to. Every time she said she would take Jenny home with her but she couldn’t since she had to take care of Jenny’s grandfather. Jenny’s mother just stared off somewhere Jenny couldn’t see. Sometimes Jenny yelled at her mother. Pounded her fists on her mother’s chest. Jenny got detention points for that. Jenny’s mother didn’t say anything. Just sat there. Her grandmother told Jenny to be respectful. Jenny said she just wanted to go home. At least Jenny had a mother to yell at.

Ashley, the classmate

Ashley has known Angelique since they were six years old. For two years, they lived next door to each other and went to the same school. Since then, Ashley has gone to high school, met Jimmy, gotten pregnant, had a baby when she was seventeen. Ashley will tell you that was harder than she thought it would be, and that the class in high school where for a week, they had to carry around a bag of flour that was supposed to be a baby was nothing like the real thing. Ashley’s mother is just about to throw her and the baby out of the house. One night after she had put the baby to sleep, Ashley snuck out of the house to see her new boyfriend at the park. She knew her mother was there in case something happened with the baby. By the time she got home, her mother was rocking the baby and yelling and cursing at her. Apparently the baby had been screaming for something and her mother had finally gotten up to find out what was wrong and couldn’t find Ashley. Ashley hasn’t been able to find a job, and even if she found one, who would take care of the baby while her mother was working her shift. Her mother says Ashley and the baby are getting on her last nerve.

Rhonda, Big John’s girlfriend

It seemed like Rhonda just wandered into town one day and ended up with Big John. They met at the bar, but nobody there seemed to know much about her. Rhonda said she was from Oklahoma and went where the wind took her. She said she could find a good church anywhere. She was small and blonde, and she wore a large cross around her neck. She liked to plant seeds and said she had left gardens wherever she had been. She has lasted longer than most of the other women who lived with Big John.

The boyfriends (so far)

Andrew

Andrew grew up working the family farm in a large Amish community. And he learned how to make furniture in his uncle’s shop. Now is his running away time. The church has told him he has to decide if he will be baptized. He and his buddy have left at the same time. They are living in an abandoned fishing shack on the lake for the summer. He has invited Angelique to come and live with them. He hasn’t told his family yet, but there is no way he is going back. All his life he had lived on the farm. Corn and soybeans. The church had told him what to do. He figures he can fish and get a job doing carpentry. He doesn’t have a car. They only had horses on the farm. Andrew was the one who had asked her online if she had freckles. Most of them asked. It was her red hair, and they couldn’t really tell from her photo. When she had told him no, he called her Freckles anyway. She calls him No Freckles. She has liked him. He has said he is in love with her picture. He told her they would catch fish every day. Even in winter they could ice fish. He said he would take care of her. And he said she was so beautiful he would always love her.

Brian

These days, Brian spent most of his time complaining about his ex-wife in his messages to Angelique. He told Angelique she was so much prettier, called her Darlin’ over and over again. He talked about his kids, how hard it was to get them to school before he had to go to work every day. About his son who was going crazy through the divorce. How much the divorce was costing him. But he couldn’t wait for Angelique to come live with him. He had plans for all of them. They could get married next month when everything was final. She could be a stay at home mom, and he would take care of her. He made good money he said. He told her he had a new car. He just needed somebody to share his life and his kids with.

Chuck

Chuck is thirty years old. Angelique had never had a boyfriend with a beard. He had his own trailer out in the woods. He told her she was beautiful, but then all the men did. He said she could come any time and live with him. She was just the woman he was looking for. He said he made deliveries in Florida. He would take her to Disney World when he was going that way. Out for a good time he said. Not the marrying kind. He had said she sounded like she could use a good time. But she hadn’t told him that she had been locked up for three years. That he was more right than he knew. He didn’t say exactly he had drugs but whatever sounded better than the ones she was taking. Going places away from here sounded good to her. She hadn’t been anywhere outside the county ever.
