Can Caroline bounce back after her career takes a nose dive due to the negligence of an uncaring, disengaged man who ran her down without so much as an apology? Elliott Maxwell is busy saving his grandmother’s company from his scheming stepmother. He decides he needs a mole and thinks Caroline is perfect for the job. Previously… Elliott was stunned as he watched Ted kiss Caroline just outside her office. That definitely hadn’t been in the plan they’d all agreed to.
“Well, that’s some imagination you have there, Caroline. What on earth made you think of that?”
Caroline was pretty sure she had crossed over to the crazy side of the moon, thus making her imagine crazy ideas about her future with this man. There was no way in hell that she was going to come clean and tell him any of those thoughts. So instead she went with a sappy lie. “Ever since I was little, I imagined having a son or a daughter to pass my set of blocks my grandfather made for me, on to my children someday.”
Elliott watched Caroline’s eyes as she told him this, and figured about half of it was true. But it was a good sappy story, so he’d let it go for now. He had more pressing matters at hand. They’d arrived at their destination. He was sure that Caroline would have no idea where they were. Turning off the engine, he looked over to see her face. It was full of surprise and bewilderment. Quickly getting out of the car, Caroline didn’t know where to look first.
“What is this place?” Turning around and around, trying to take in all the beauty at once, Caroline stopped when she noticed Elliott standing and staring at her. Puzzled, she asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing’s wrong, Caro,” walking towards her, “nothing at all.” Coming to a stop directly in front of her, Elliott took her hands and brought them to his lips, kissing each finger right below her knuckles. For some reason, he loved this part of a woman’s hand. He always had. Especially when those hands are adorned with diamonds.
“Then tell me what we are doing here?” Pleading with him only made his smile grow wider. “I’ve never seen this many lights on a house before. It’s not even Christmas!” The house was a beautiful old Craftsman, which had obviously been restored recently. There were lights at every window, at every external beam, and along the porch. Even the trees were lit up!
Elliott stood and watched Caroline as she gazed all around. He loved that she appreciated all the hard work that went into his surprise. It had turned out beautifully. He knew within days of meeting Caroline she was the one for him. He’d sent his men on a mission to find the perfect house and they’d certainly done their job. Part of him was still upset with Ted for messing up his plans, but the look on Caroline’s face has made all of it worthwhile.
“Elliott,” Caroline had come to stand in front of him, but he was far away in his thoughts. “Elliott? Are you okay?”
Finally coming back, he gave his head a shake and focused on Caro. “Yes, of course. Everything is fantastic. Look around you. Do you love this place?”
“It’s fantastic! I’ve never seen anything so beautiful. Whose house is this?”
