Episode 19 – Overboard
As Gabby watched the lifeboat drift off into the distance, John had a change of heart. While he certainly wasn’t the type to feel remorse, he did have the capacity to understand when he had jeopardized his own interests. It would be a disservice to himself and his sister if he didn’t at least look into her accusations. John searched the ship high and low until finding his sister staring out to sea with arms crossed, a strange, plotting look on her face.
Seeing him out of the corner of her eye, she began speaking in a strange, haunting tone. “You know, you’re not the first of our family to disappoint me, but I swear on my life you’ll be the last.”
“Gabby, what on Earth do you mean?” John seemed truly confounded by her demeanor and to what she was alluding.
“I remembered something, “she said, still staring out to sea. “I remember a lot of things. You and dad left because of mum. You were always leaving me because of mum. If you’d have ever come back home you’d have known I took care of the problem, so you never had to leave me again, but you never even came back. I had to find you and you acted like you never even gave me another thought; like I was some stray cat you had to take in.”
“Took care of the problem? What problem” John was even more perplexed, but got the sense that the discussion had taken a turn for the worse.
“Mum. I got rid of Mum. She was a stupid cow of a woman anyway. Always making you and Dad want to leave. Funny, you never even asked. I guess that fight about the drugs you and Dad were smuggling on your precious Eloise was the last straw. To be fair, I never asked what you did to Dad either. I thought it would be fine just the two of us, but I’m always your last priority.”
Gabby continued rambling angrily as the captain tried to register what she had said. He assumed she ran away from home and nothing more. He hadn’t heard from his mother, but then, he never tried. He had no use for her, but he by no means wanted her dead. He couldn’t find the words or the will to respond to his sister. He knew she was a little crazy, but this was on a higher plane of psychotic than he could have realized. Not knowing what else to do, he simply turned from her and began to walk away to evaluate how to handle the revelation.
“Don’t you walk away from me!” Gabby shrieked and grabbed at John’s jacket.
Angrily he pulled away from her and walked to the other side of the deck.
Livid, Gabby picked up the heaviest object she could find and struck him with it squarely in the head, simultaneously knocking him overboard and rendering him unconscious.
