The Captain’s Captive by Lyndsie Askea

Trying to find herself, she never felt so lost. Waking up in a strange place is a nightmare, especially when you’re being held against your will. Now Aubrey Elliott must find her way home, wherever that is. Previously… Gabby begins to hatch a plan for revenge, as Mile and Aubrey come up with a plan of their own.

Episode 18 – False Security

The repairs to the ship took place faster than Aubrey could have imagined. Once a plan of action was formed, the crew sprung to action.

Aubrey and Miles’s plan had evolved just as quickly. The moment the ship set sail, they would sneak onto a lifeboat and hightail it to the mainland. Given the amount of time they were gone prior to the storm, they couldn’t be far from an inhabited location.

The yacht was abuzz with excitement and activity, though it was overshadowed by the loss and injury of crew members. Some were more affected by the losses than others. In reality, many of the people onboard were sociopaths who were on the run, so their ability to feel real sympathy was less than that of Miles and Aubrey.

Meanwhile, Gabby was plotting her revenge. Her anger was no longer focused only on Aubrey and Miles, but now also on her brother, whose lapse in loyalty she took to be an unforgivable affront. On the island, there was little she could do to get what she believed to be justice. She might be able to take down one or two of the transgressors, but the island was too small to remain unapprehended for long. She had to wait until they were at sea, where she could enact her own plan in secret until it was too late for anyone to notice what had transpired. Gabby was out for blood, and she would stop at nothing to ensure the demise of those who had slighted her.
________

Finally back at sea, Aubrey and Miles met in their predetermined location, back in the engine room. Perhaps returning to the scene of the “crime” was foolish, but no one would expect them there. As Miles went over the plan one final time, Aubrey felt the urge to get answers swell inside her once again, but this time, it was about she and Miles.

“Miles, is this the best thing? I mean, why would you do all this for me? I know we kissed once, but that doesn’t mean you are obligated to help me.” Aubrey shrank back after this line of questioning, not sure she wanted to hear his response. Maybe he really didn’t want to help her and he was only doing it out of a sense of duty. Maybe for some reason he felt he owed her.

“Aubrey, for years I have been at John’s beck and call. He threatened my family and made sure any option I had of getting away and living a normal life was null and void. I’ve grown to care for you, that’s true, but this is as much for me as you. I can’t live like this anymore and I can’t sit by and watch him do this to someone else. Just let me help you.”

Not sure she entirely loved his reply, Aubrey accepted it and moved on with the plan.

Minutes after Miles and Aubrey boarded the lifeboat and shoved off, Gabby sought them out. Looking into the dark distance, she could just make out the white lining of the small vessel, drifting off to what they believed would be safety.
