Episode 16 – Caught

Fear shook Aubrey to her core. She heard far too much and now she was finished. Miles and John rounded the corner to see who was nearby.

“Aubrey, what are you doing down here, love? You should be resting.” John’s mood seemed somewhere between concerned and suspicious.

“I…I was looking for you and I tripped. Gabby came by and she seemed upset and confused. Still. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt.” Aubrey stammered out a reply and though it sounded insincere to her own ears, John seems to buy it.

“You’ve got to be more careful. Lots of places you can get hurt on a ship in the state ours is in.” John seemed genuinely worried for her well-being.

Miles looked somewhat less relieved, but then, he was perpetually rigid no matter what transpired. “Captain, shouldn’t you alert the crew to our plans?”

John’s good will toward Aubrey faded as he looked at his first mate, with whom he was still mid-argument. Deciding not to take it further, he agreed and left abruptly.

As soon as the man had gone, Miles turned sharply toward Aubrey. “What on Earth were you thinking coming down here? Do you have any idea how badly this could have gone? How much did you hear?”

“I think you know how much, but what’s it to you? You’re the lacky, not me!” Aubrey suddenly grew angry, not really knowing why.

“I am no such thing. I’ve been running myself ragged trying to keep you safe. To keep you from getting stuck with that lunatic, and all you have to say is accuse me of being his lacky? Maybe you two deserve each other!” In his anger, Miles had not realized how close his face had grown to Aubrey.

“Oh, is that so? Then why am I still on this freaking ship?” Aubrey’s eyes met Miles’s and all the words she planned to say left her.

Without knowing who instigated it or how it even happened, their lips were suddenly locked in a passionate kiss. Pushing her against the wall, Miles lost all control. He never even considered making such a risky move on a woman his volatile boss professed to love, but he was drawn to her in a way he couldn’t comprehend. Aubrey gave in to the moment, her mind erased of whatever had angered her moments before.

Miles drew back with a start, his attention diverted to the figure in the doorway. There in the doorway, mouth agape, was Gabby. She had gone looking for Aubrey and found far more than she had bargained for. Aubrey lifted her hand, meaning to find some words to explain what had happened but finding none. Not that it mattered. With hatred in her eyes, Gabby had turned to leave.

Miles and Aubrey stood for a moment in silence, unsure of whether to chase her down or address what had just transpired.
