Can Caroline bounce back after her career takes a nose dive due to the negligence of an uncaring, disengaged man who ran her down without so much as an apology? Elliott Maxwell is busy saving his grandmother’s company from his scheming stepmother. He decides he needs a mole and thinks Caroline is perfect for the job. Previously… Elliott decided to move Caroline into his house, and they would pretend to be in love. He picked up a new nickname for her, GC, which is short for Girlfriend Caroline. He thought he was clever until Caroline called him BE. Now it wasn’t so funny.
Sticking his tongue out trying to assess the damage, Elliott bent over his sink to stare in the mirror. He still couldn’t believe Caroline bit him so hard. He could understand her being a tiny bit mad at him, but come on, biting him? That was a bit extreme.
“Surveying the damage, BE?” Caroline asked as she leaned against the door jam to his bathroom.
Narrowing his eyes, Elliott closed his mouth and turned around. “There was no need for violence, Caroline. I had to make it seem like we had fallen in love.” Walking towards her, he continued, “unfortunately even my staff can succumb to pressures of the media and anyone else wanting the truth about me.”
Caroline froze as he turned towards her. She knew it was a mistake to follow him, but she found herself unable to leave well enough alone. The closer Elliott got, the more she wanted to turn and run. However, her feet didn’t get that message. Neither did her mouth. “Elliott, no one is going to believe that we have fallen in love overnight, so let’s just forget this nonsense and get to work.”
“Oh, we’ll get to work GC,” closing the distance until she could feel his breath on her face, “but first,” leaning in, he grabbed her head and kissed her forehead, “I have to show you to your room.”
Stepping away from her, he walked to the door. “Coming? We don’t have all day.”
Shaking her head, Caroline knew two things. One, she was a complete idiot. She was never going to get through this unscathed. And two. She was never buying coffee for anyone ever again. Ever.
The room Elliott showed her, already had her things from her apartment unpacked and arranged. She turned to thank him, but he had disappeared. Weird. Turning her attention back to the room, she moved in further. She could see he had gone to an awful lot of trouble to make this look like her apartment. Walking to her closet, she gently opened it, expecting shoes to fall from the shelf. Gasping, Caroline could not believe what she was seeing. Stepping into the huge room, she could see it was larger than her bedroom at her old place. Un-freakin’-believable. Walking around, she let her gaze roam over every detail. The rotating shoe rack, the rows of colorful clothes and the center island. OMG!
“Caroline? Are you in here?” Elliott’s voice caught on her ears. He sounded a little worried, tinged with a little annoyance.
Peeking out from around the closet door, she said, “Elliott, have you seen this?” Pointing to the closet as she swung the door open further.
Nodding, Elliott lost all the humor in his face. With dead eyes, he walked toward her. “We need to go and meet with a few people before work tomorrow. They are waiting for us downstairs.”
Disappointed, Caroline’s face fell flat. All the happiness she felt a minute ago was instantly gone. If he didn’t want her here, why did he bring her?
