Trying to find herself, she never felt so lost. Waking up in a strange place is a nightmare, especially when you’re being held against your will. Now Aubrey Elliott must find her way home, wherever that is. Previously… Taken against her will, Aubrey was unaware of where she was. Wrecked on an uninhabited island, suddenly, she was not the only one without a clue where they were. Gabby seemed to have lost her memory, but the activity onboard the ship kept Aubrey from asking many questions.
Episode 12 – Memory Loss
Aubrey had never seen a grown woman look so much like a little girl. Amidst the chaos around them, Gabby made herself as small as possible with a look of terror in her eyes. Aubrey was the captive, but John’s sister was the one who looked like a caged animal. The captain seemed not to notice, still frantic to find some solution to their predicament. Aubrey didn’t know why, but she felt Miles’ absence sharply, wondering when he might return. Painfully, she made her way to Gabby, sitting silently by her side clutching her injured arm like a teddy bear.
“Why won’t they tell me anything?”
Aubrey looked at the girl with sympathy, knowing the feeling. Her face suddenly hardened with the sudden memory of Gabby’s refusal to fill her in only hours ago. Why should she care that she wasn’t the only one in the dark? Still, she realized that this new and apparently regressed girl could be the key to finding out what happened.
“I don’t know,” Aubrey said, trying to keep the disdain from her voice long enough to win Gabby’s favor. “A lot has happened. You said the last thing you remembered was being at home, right? Anything else?”
“Mum. I remember Mum. She was angry with Johnny and Dad. Something about the Eloise, but I only walked in at the last minute from my room. Dad stormed out and Johnny followed him. That’s the last thing, besides…” Her voice trailed, leaving Aubrey in suspense.
Gabby was about to reply when Miles walked back into the room.
The captain suddenly stopped commanding the crew and walked over to his first mate, seeming desperate for some sort of encouraging word. He was let down when Miles said in a somber tone, “Gerry’s gone. The kitchen crew is in bits.”
“That’s all very sad, but what are we going to do about the Eloise?” Aubrey was shocked by John’s callous disinterest in the fate of one of his men.
Miles seemed unsurprised and replied with the weather report, as though that was what the captain had asked in the first place. “There is no way we could get off this rock, even if the ship wasn’t in this state. Looks like there is another squall coming this way. We need to hunker down at least until that passes. For now, I need to get the girls to a safer place. Both of them need tending.”
Aubrey looked at Gabby for a moment and could have sworn she saw a hint of a blush. Of course, she could feel the color rush to her cheeks as she considered Miles’s concern for them, especially since Gabby’s own brother seemed more worried for his ship than he was for his own flesh and blood, let alone a woman he had professed to love.
Miles instructed a member of the crew to see Gabby to her stateroom, then looked from John to Aubrey. “I’ll see your guest to her quarters.”
A flutter rose in the captive’s stomach.
