Episode 5

Caroline threw the front door open when she heard the knock. Sucking in a breath, she gazed at Elliott, not knowing what to say. He was perfect. From his styled hair to his polished shoes, he was the definition of a perfect man. Caroline was in trouble. She knew she could not, under any circumstances, be alone with this man. She was sure she was looking at him like he was an ice cream sundae at a Weight Watcher’s convention.

Shaking her head to clear the whipped cream and nuts, she focused on his bright eyes. “Elliott, I don’t think I can do this.” Turning away quickly before he could see the truth, she didn’t hear him come up behind her.

“Caroline. Look at me.” Turning her around, he hooked his finger under her chin, forcing her eyes to meet his. He was startled by the look of insecurity he saw there. “You have no idea. No idea at all, do you?” Letting her chin go, he let her step away from him and hide once again.

“I don’t know what you mean. I’m just saying I don’t think it’s a good idea for us to be seen together. Especially if you want me to start work in the design department tomorrow. Don’t you think that screams, “Hey! I’m sleeping with a Maxwell, and I got my job back!” just a little?”

“No, as a matter of fact, I don’t,” he told her. He had to admit though, she did bring up a good point. He didn’t want to cause her any problems with her coworkers. He knew he should be more concerned about Kitty, but he had gathered enough information, so any more that Caroline gathered was icing at this point. But he didn’t think about her peers. “Okay, I can see where some people might get that idea. Maybe a little bit.”

When she harrumphed, he said, “Okay, maybe a little bit more than that.” Striding towards her, he put his hands on her hips, gathering her close. He watched her eyes get big, then dark with desire. They mirrored his own, he was sure. He walked her back slowly until she felt the wall behind her. “First, we have to establish if that’s any of their business.” Lowering his mouth to hers, he captured her lips in a searing kiss. Caroline’s mind went blank right before it exploded with bright colorful fireworks. She always thought that was a cliché. She now knew it was the truth.

Elliott told his mouth to quit, but his lips were having none of it. He felt like he was kissing sunshine and happiness. He was home. Regretfully breaking the kiss, he leaned his forehead against hers, mixing their breath.

“Caroline, I’ve changed my mind.”

She pushed out of his hold so fast he almost lost his footing. “I knew it. Nothing this good ever lasts.”

Grabbing her before she could stalk away, he said, “Baby, you’ve got it all wrong.”
