The Captain’s Captive by Lyndsie Askea

The Captain’s Captive by Lyndsie Askea

Trying to find herself, she never felt so lost. Waking up in a strange place is a nightmare, especially when you’re being held against your will. Now Aubrey Elliott must find her way home, wherever that is. Previously… Aubrey finds herself a captive on board a yacht where the captain is under the impression that she is in love with him. He proposes to her, only to learn that the Coast Guard is heavy on the heels of the Eloise.

Episode 9 – The Storm

“It’s unheard of, sir, but we can certainly try!” Miles looked unsure, but he was too afraid to tell the captain the truth. The Coast Guard was faster and better equipped than they.

Without thinking, Aubrey asked, “What can I do?” She wondered immediately why she wouldn’t welcome the idea of the Coast Guard capturing the man who had kidnapped her not 24 hours ago.

John grabbed her hand and said, “Come with me. I can use your support.”

The three and Gabby, who had been standing to the side angrily, rushed to the bridge to get a better read on the situation. It was dire. The yacht was slower than the Coast Guard’s boats, but there was a storm on the horizon.

“Sir, it’s a risk, but if we head into the storm, there is a chance we can lose them. Really, they might not even follow. All we need to do is get out to international waters and they have no specific jurisdiction over your movements,” Miles went on, “Now, if they have any evidence of piracy, they may pursue, but that’s not what they’ve got at the moment.”

Aubrey heard what the first mate said, but it didn’t quite register; there was so much information in that one matter of fact statement. Maybe for the others it all made sense, but she was horrified. First of all, what on Earth would make a storm more appealing than letting the Coast Guard board their ship. They must have something to hide. Second, what was John alleged to have done? In spite of herself, Aubrey searched Miles’ eyes. She didn’t want to trust him, but there was something in his countenance that she couldn’t help but put her faith in. John and Gabby were shrouded in an aura of mystery and dishonesty, but she felt Miles was her best chance at getting out of the mess in which she found herself. She just couldn’t put her finger on why.

“Do it. Head into the storm. My Eloise can handle anything we throw at ‘er.” John’s confidence returned, exuding an air of excitement.

Miles continued full speed ahead, the communications panel squawking warnings to stop. Aubrey registered the look of concern on his face. No matter what, it was dangerous. The storm might take the ship, but the Coast Guard would almost surely take John in for questioning. Everyone on the ship, even Aubrey, could be culpable for whatever horrible thing the captain had done.

The waves grew ever higher as the clouds grew darker. Aubrey’s stomach lurched as the largest swell she ever witnessed threatened to overtake the ship. Regardless of the danger, the Guard was close on their heels. They were determined to stop the Eloise and apprehend the racketeer on board.

As the yacht dipped into the water and sea spray washed over them, Gabby grew increasingly somber. For the first time, Aubrey saw true fear in her eyes.

Looking ahead, all they could see was black ocean, ready to swallow them whole.
