Episode 6 – The Captain’s Bridge

Although he kept his composure in front of the young woman in the dining room, Miles was burning with rage at John’s latest stunt. Thundering down the hall toward the bridge, he considered what he might say without sparking a violent outburst from the captain. Miles had known the man for many years, and though he wasn’t above blackmailing a criminal or two, this is the first time he had ever involved an innocent in his enterprise. During the time of their acquaintance, however, he had learned that saying the wrong thing to someone like John was a deadly mistake. Miles’ only advantage was the respect he had earned as a sort of advisor to an otherwise volatile racketeer. Reaching his destination, he took a moment to gain his composure. It wouldn’t help anyone if he didn’t keep his head.

“Beautiful evening, isn’t it old friend,” John Smith turned to speak, knowing without looking who it was.

Miles took in the sunset in front of them before returning his attention to the captain. “John, about the girl…”

“Ah yes! Lovely, isn’t she? I can’t wait to see her face when I reveal the big surprise.” John’s eyes danced, as they so often did.

Actually, Miles couldn’t remember a time when John looked anything besides jovial. Even when he had to, as he would say, “put down” an enemy, the man would smile with a strange enjoyment. It was disturbing, especially since it made him exceedingly difficult to read.

Miles pressed for some clue to John’s meaning. “Surprise, sir?”

“Well, I’m going to propose, of course!”

“Propose. Propose what?”

“Marriage! What else? Miles, she is the love of my life and I plan to spend the rest of my days with her.” John’s demeanor showed no sign of sarcasm, only a sincere belief in the madness he was spouting.

Miles was at a total loss. The girl who called herself “Aubrey” certainly did not give any impression that she even knew who the captain was and definitely not where she was. For reasons Miles didn’t quite understand, a queasy feeling began to creep into his gut.

“Sir, is that prudent? I got the impression that this was all rather…new.”

“Adams, you haven’t got an ounce of romance in your blood. No wonder my sister can’t manage to catch you.” John said it without guile, but it still made Miles wince in a combination of embarrassment and mild disgust. “No matter,” John continued, “I suppose if you did give in to her wiles, you’d lose your appeal. Anyway, just because you’re romantically stunted, doesn’t mean this isn’t real.”

“Romantically stunted.” Miles considered being offended, but this was getting off track. “You know what? Never mind. Look, the girl seems to be a little confused. Maybe now’s not the time to…”

“Nonsense! Now is exactly the time, and when she says yes, I want you to do the honors.” John continued to beam as Miles felt bile rise in his throat.
