Episode 5 – Miles

In spite of her growing discomfort, Aubrey silently marveled at the ornate dining room aboard John’s yacht, complete with balcony and chandelier. Seated on the velvet upholstery of a hand carved chair, she ran her fingers across the smooth mahogany table adorned with china that likely cost more than her last car. Having never traveled on any vessel bigger than a rowboat in her entire life, she couldn’t believe it was even possible to experience such luxury at sea. Hours earlier, Aubrey had accepted an invitation to dine with someone who, as far as she knew, had taken her captive. At the time, she couldn’t put her finger on why she complied with John’s request. Ultimately she realized she did not agree out of fear, but morbid curiosity. Aubrey knew she should be afraid, but until she understood what she was really dealing with, she thought it in her best interest to see how it played out before making any rash moves.

Lost in these thoughts, Aubrey failed to register that she wasn’t alone until she heard a male voice clearing his throat. Her eyes shot up to the balcony, where stood a man looking supremely uncomfortable. For reasons she couldn’t quite explain, Aubrey felt a sudden wave of humiliation. She didn’t even know this man, but his judgmental gaze made her feel as though she was not the first strange woman to turn up aboard the ship. He was attractive, but not with the overwhelming intensity of John. While her captor had an unshakeable look of amusement in his eyes, this man had a hard set to his jaw and a sadness that furrowed his brow.

“I’m terribly sorry if I gave you a start, miss,” he finally said in a British accent, “I’m Miles Adams, First Mate. The captain sent me to tell you he would be along directly.”

“Oh, um, th-thank you,” Aubrey stammered her reply, “I’m Aubrey. Could…well…do you think you could tell me where we are?”

She didn’t mean to ask the stranger the question. Really, there was no way to know if she could trust him, but hours of uncertainty had suddenly made her desperate for answers.

The man looked genuinely surprised at the question. “I’m not sure I understand. You don’t know?”

“I just…it’s that one minute I was out for a drink, and then I woke up on this yacht and I don’t know how, or why. I can’t remember anything. I’ve tried but I just can’t and I don’t know what to do.” The words poured from Aubrey’s mouth as tears welled in her eyes.

The surprise on Miles’ face was replaced with concern and a hint of anger. Aubrey thought perhaps he would shed some light on the situation, but instead, he said sharply, “Again, I apologize for startling you, but I have an urgent matter I must attend to.”

With that, Miles turned abruptly and walked away.
