Previously… Vera works for a company called Loan Some, that loans out friends to the lonely and for other events. Recently, her relationship with Cole turned romantic, but there’s a complication. Readers voted for Cole to be afraid of his fiance’s weird, scary, mafia family.
“It’s more complicated than that.”
“How so?” Vera assumed it was because Cole and Jill were living together and getting married, while she and Greg weren’t as serious.
“Jill’s a Banaszewski.”
Vera stared at him, waiting for Cole to say more. “And?”
“You don’t know the Banaszewskis?”
“They’re the local Polish mafia. They started years ago to rub out all of the people who made bad jokes about their heritage and now they’re involved in more devious deeds, to say the least. Jill’s brother told me if I ever hurt her, in any way, he’d make my knees the butt of his joke.”
“What does that mean?”
Cole’s eyes sliced right through Vera. “Are you serious? He’s going to break my knees.”
“I wasn’t sure whether he was going to start a joke about your knees. You never finished that marathon training, after all.”
“Anyway, I can’t exactly just ask her for time to think about this wedding.”
“What do you need to think about?”
“You, obviously.” Cole stopped in front of Vera’s car. “Vera, I think I’m in love with you.”
As she looked into Cole’s eyes, Vera’s heart stopped. “Oh.”
“You didn’t know?”
“I thought it was obvious.”
“I thought you maybe just wanted to explore this relationship. I didn’t think you were serious.”
“Aren’t you serious about me?” Cole’s eyes swelled with emotion. Vera had never seen him so genuine.
“Yeah.” Vera wasn’t even convinced by herself.
“You hesitated. Great. I just made a fool out of myself.” Cole hid his face, backing away from her.
“It’s not that I’m not serious, Cole. I just didn’t know you felt that way.”
“Forget I ever said anything.” He walked in the opposite direction toward his car.
Vera watched him walk away, his hands in his pockets. “Crap.”
Back at Loan Some headquarters, Vera tried not to think about Cole as Bruce Kitchen brought her up to speed on new assignments.
“Vera, you OK?”
“Yeah. Fine. So what’s going on?”
“I don’t know if we’ve ever done this before, but. . .can you do two assignments in one day?” Bruce scrunched his face in anticipation of Vera’s answer.
“I suppose I could. What are they?”
“One, a blind man who wants you to go on a lunch date with him to see if his ex is still in love with him.”
“OK.” It sounded as outlandish as most Loan Some assignments.
“And second, be the assistant to ‘The World’s Worst Magician.’”
“What makes him the worst?”
Bruce sighed and slumped his shoulders. WIN $50 Amazon gift certificates by voting WEEKLY! Enter your address each time to be eligible to win. Vote below on what will happen next or if reading by email click view poll.
