Previously… Aubrey woke up in a strange place only to discover she was out to sea with little memory of how she got there. Worse still, she discovered the stateroom door was locked.

Episode 2 – Escape Attempt

For a moment, the world seemed to stand still. Aubrey’s fingers remained wrapped around the doorknob as though they were a part of it. She couldn’t think, move, or make a single sound. Her heart felt as if it had slowed and her lungs as though the air had been sucked from them. Then, as if to make up for lost time, everything seemed to resume at the speed of light. Her mind began racing, trying to make sense of this turn of events. Seconds before, she thought she was simply in an awkward situation. Suddenly, the danger felt palpable.

Aubrey quickly weighed her options. She considered yelling, but whom exactly would that summon? Better to keep quiet for now. She glanced at the windows, and even though she thought she might be able to shimmy through one of them, what purpose would it serve? Where could she go? Aubrey didn’t know the layout of the boat. Jumping through a window could prove reckless. Realizing the doorknob was still tightly grasped in her hand, Aubrey decided she had to try to at least get out of this room. Maybe she could manage to remain unseen until she could assess the situation. She would still be stuck at sea, but at least she would know more about what she was up against.

She would have to try to pick the lock on the door. Aubrey couldn’t help but wonder what kind of person would keep a door fastened from the outside. Obviously, it was the kind of person who takes a person to sea against her will, she decided. Shaking the thought from her mind, Aubrey focused on the task at hand. She cursed herself silently for failing to wear hairpins but remembered with relief that the closet she opened by mistake was filled with wire hangers. Joan Crawford would have been livid, but Aubrey was elated. She rushed to the closet and grabbed the nearest hanger, allowing the suit jacket it held to fall to the ground. Disassembling it, Aubrey returned to the door determined to manufacture an escape.

Thrusting the tip of her new lock-pick through the hole in the knob, Aubrey jiggled the handle furiously, practically begging it to open. Just when she thought she was making headway, the latch clicked open from the other side. Still crouched down in her efforts to break free, Aubrey lost her balance as the door opened inward to reveal the face of the stranger from the night before. She was horrified at herself when in spite of her terror, she still noted how attractive he was in the light of day.

“Darling, what exactly do you think you’re doing down there?” the stranger asked with an Australian accent, amusement behind his mesmerizing smile.

Sitting stunned on the floor, taking in this man’s chiseled jawline, and hearing his voice again brought Aubrey’s memory flooding back. In spite of the danger, her mind began playing back the evening like a movie as the stranger gazed at her in anticipation. WIN $50 Amazon gift certificates by voting WEEKLY! Enter your address each time to be eligible to win. Vote below on what will happen next or if reading by email click view poll.
