Previously… Vera works for a company called Loan Some, that loans out friends to the lonely and for other events. After sharing a kiss with Cole, Vera is trying to figure out her feelings for him or whether she should stay with Greg.
“You ready for this?” said Cole.
Vera and Cole met in front of a three-story home that boasted bright orange brick and high windows, a modern style Vera had only seen while flipping through Better Homes and Gardens. As they passed a For Sale sign at the entrance, Cole attempted to kiss her on the cheek.
“What are you doing?” she rebuked.
“Trying to be affectionate.”
“Are you being Cole or Bryce Larson, the man who wants to buy this house?”
“Cole,” he said sweetly, moving in for a kiss again.
“You’re still with her. I’m not going to be the Other Woman.”
“Well, you’re still with him. I don’t want to be the Other Man.”
This was true. Vera and Greg hadn’t entirely ended their relationship. They just hadn’t talked in a week, with Greg giving her space to figure out whether she wanted to live with him or not while he was on a business trip for which he was due back any day now.
“Let’s just do this.” Vera adjusted the hat she was wearing. She had tucked her vibrant red curls under it in order to remain inconspicuous.
Cole and Vera had been hired as loaners by real estate agent Carrie Arcos to drive up the bids on this house.
“It’s been on the market for years,” said Carrie on the phone. “Finally, I have one couple on the line, but the couple selling the house wants more money than they’re bidding.”
At the front door of the house, Cole, wearing a fake mustache, grabbed Vera’s hand. Vera looked at him suspiciously.
“This is Bryce Larson,” he said.
“This is Deirdre Larson,” she said, accepting his gesture. “But this is Vera.” She squeezed hard on his hand.
“Ouch!” He pulled away, shaking off the pain.
When they entered the house, they were immediately greeted by Carrie Arcos, who looked like the stereotypical real estate agent. She had short, perfectly coiffed blonde hair, and wore a blazer and pencil skirt, with high heels that gave her power.
“Hello, Larsons!” she said with a smile that stretched across her face. “So glad you could make it.”
“So glad to finally see this house in person,” said Vera as Deirdre.
“Let me take you on a tour.”
Carrie ushered Vera and Cole upstairs and broke character. “The other couple is outside on the back porch. I’ll just pretend like I’m taking you on a tour and then you can give me your bid.”
After the upstairs tour ended, Vera and Cole followed Carrie back downstairs, to find the other couple sitting in the living room.
“I think I’ve already seen enough,” said Cole as Bryce. “How about you, hun?”
Vera realized that she knew the other couple from a previous Loan Some assignment. “Oh, I’ve definitely seen enough.”
Who is the couple Vera and Cole are trying to outbid?
