Previously… Aspiring actress turned undercover Loan Some employee, Beth, is given a second chance to prove she’s ‘Loan Some material’ after botching her first assignment. She’s given a high stakes, top-secret assignment: to pose as the state Governor’s runaway daughter at a high profile event. She just saved the Governor from public humiliation by escorting his mistress out of the ballroom.
The austere picture of Laney Williamson standing in the center of the hallway with her hands on her hips and elbows jutting out like two railway crossing barricades was the last thing Beth anticipated after victoriously whisking the Governor’s mistress out of the crowded ball room. She felt the mistress’s weeping, willowy body become rigid in her arms. “What do you want?” she whispered, trying to salvage all of her remaining dignity with the upward tilt of her narrow chin.
“Calm down, Camilla,” came Laney’s surprisingly cool voice. “I’m not here to yell at you.”
“I wouldn’t care if you were,” Camilla replied with a forced laugh.
Laney took a broad step toward Camilla.
Beth jumped in between the women. “Now let’s remain civil here.” To her shock, an unfazed Laney pushed her aside and hugged Camilla.
“My husband’s a bastard. I don’t blame his mistakes on you.” She smiled, brushing a few stray tears from her cheeks. “Larry’s penchant for cheating is his own problem and fault.”
Camilla looked over at Beth, who quickly realized she was probably gawking. “And who are you? Why are you dressed like Samantha?”
To Beth’s relief, Laney answered for her. “Samantha’s runaway and gotten married. This woman is playing her tonight, so the press won’t have a field day with her absence during Larry’s big night.”
“She got married?” Beth and Camilla asked in unison.
“To a very sweet young man.” Laney smiled proudly. “I met them this morning at the courthouse.”
“Does Larry know?” Camilla asked.
“Not yet…” Laney replied with a mischievous smile.
Beth felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned around to find her boss, Frank, beside her, a giddy grin plastered across his face. “You did all right, kiddo. You really know how to think on your feet.”
“Does this mean I’m not fired?” she asked.
“I’d say you have a Loan Some future,” he replied with a wink.
The cool breeze whipped through Beth’s hair as she made her way to her car. She was about to call her parents to tell them the good news when Richard came into view. Sure enough, he was walking directly toward her.
“I’ve been looking for you,” he called.
“Given your job title I’m surprised you didn’t find me sooner,” she teased.
“You’re quite elusive,” he replied with a sideways grin.
“I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“Good. It’s meant to be.” He cleared his throat. “I’d love to meet over coffee if you’re free next week.”
Beth felt her heart flutter. “Oh…ah…”
He raised a hand in the air. “Don’t look so dismayed. I’m not asking you out. I have a business proposition for you.”
“A business proposition?” she couldn’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment.
“You have topnotch conflict-resolution skills and you’re also great at going undercover. I think you’d make a stellar detective for my private eye agency,” he said, raising his eyebrows hopefully.
Beth smiled inwardly at the thought of working with him everyday. She looked up at him coyly. “I might be interested…” Beth’s phone chirped. Her heart skipped a beat when she read the text.
