Previously…William warns Jade that she may be in danger, and reminds her how involved in the case she has become. Readers voted that in court the next day, new information about Sebastian comes to light.

Episode 11

The morning of the first day of the trial, Jade stood in front of her full-length mirror looking at the polished, conservative, I-support-my-incarcerated-fiancée-one-hundred-percent outfit she had put together. She had spent a fitful night tossing and turning in the sheets as half-conscious, half-dream scenarios rolled around in her mind. She saw herself on the witness stand, eyes locked with Sebastian who was controlling her mind from the defense table; Sebastian on the stand, telling the courtroom about their love life in detail; William pacing back and forth, his voice magnified and thundering, eventually turning into a giant lion which began systematically eating the members of the jury. Jade had woken up in a cold sweat.

But now, all she felt was tired and strangely calm. She looked the part, which after all, was her only real job. She would sit in the courtroom playing the silent role of the tearful, loving fiancée, and then she would go home. No more driving around seeking out witnesses, no more late night diner meetings, no more tapped phones, and quiet threats. She nodded confidently at her reflection and walked out the door.

Nevertheless, Jade was nervous as she entered the buzzing courtroom. She looked around for William but saw only a sea of unfamiliar faces. Her phone conversation with William the day before came back to her — “Between the prison visit and the trips to the stable and the Downing home, the fact that you are Sebastian’s fiancée has become known to the public.” She glanced around, wondering if anyone recognized her. Karen Rice, she reminded herself. They’re seeing Karen Rice, devoted fiancée of Sebastian Downing.

All of a sudden, she heard a low voice in her ear.

“Hello Karen,” William said. Jade jumped. “Sorry,” he said, grinning slightly. “I didn’t mean to startle you. Have a seat.” He gestured to a nearby bench.

“I’ll be right over there,” he said quietly. “Just sit here, and try not to speak to anyone.” He raised his voice slightly. “Don’t worry,” he continued, “Sebastian will be fine.” He winked.

Jade sat down. She watched William return to the defense table where Sebastian was sitting. She saw William lean over and whisper something in his ear, after which Sebastian turned around and smiled lovingly at Jade, who blew him a kiss back.

“Excuse me.” Jade turned to the woman next to her, who was staring at Jade as if she had just punched the woman in the face. “Are you Karen Rice? Sebastian Downing’s girlfriend?”

Jade sighed. The trial hadn’t even started and already here she was talking to someone, the one thing William had told her not to do.

“That’s right,” she said carefully. “Fiancée, actually. Who are you?”

The woman gave a tiny laugh. “I’m his ex-wife. I’m only here because I’m testifying for the prosecution. Sebastian absolutely killed that man, and if you believe anything else you’re either in denial or crazy.” She shook her head.

“Good luck with your future, Ms. Rice, you’re going to need it.” WIN $50 Amazon gift certificates by voting WEEKLY! Enter your address each time you vote then check your email to confirm. Vote below on what will happen next or if reading by email click view poll.
