Damen’s eyes looked right into her soul, and Lily couldn’t resist. She didn’t want to trouble him with what had just happened, but she couldn’t help opening her mouth.

“It’s Isabelle,” said Lily softly. She could see his eyes change from concern to a serious-but-focused look.

“What did she do?”

“Well, she told me that she wants you and is going to take you from me. And also that there was nothing I could do about it, so I should just let you go.”

The words just rolled out of her mouth before Lily could even comprehend what she was saying. After she finished, her sentence she noticed Damen was tense.

Damen looked into the crowd of people and then said, “I’ll be back.” He got up from the chair and started to walk toward the crowd.

“Um… Ryan?”

Damen turned around and looked at Lily. He softly smiled. “Don’t worry. I’ll take care of this.”

Just like that, he was gone, into the crowd. Did I say something wrong? Why did he have a cold look in his eye when I said “Isabelle”? Lily sat at the table for several more minutes. She didn’t think Damen was going to come back right away. Then, she got up and walked out onto the patio out back.

The moon. Lily realized the day had gone by ridiculously quick. It was already nighttime, even if the moon was barely over the horizon. Everything looked even more radiant in the moonlight.

“Oh! Good evening, miss.”

Lily was startled by the strange voice of a man. She spun around. It was the newlywed groom. He was walking out onto the patio as well. Lily was tongue-tied.

“Great night, isn’t it? I’ve always loved this place.” His smile was gentle and happy. He came to a stop next to Lily and smiled while staring out onto the landscape. He breathed in deeply while closing his eyes, and when he released, his smile slowly disappeared.

“I’m sorry for asking this, but do you have a moment to talk to a stranger like me?”

Lily didn’t even now this man, but some part of her told her to listen. She shook her head yes.

“I am so happy to be married, but I am nervous, too. I feel a sudden pressure. Ten wonderful years of being with this amazing woman, and at no time did I feel this much pressure. Now that everything is done, I feel a mix of emotions. Do you have any advice?”

Lily giggled. The groom was shocked. She shook her head, then looked at him.

“That’s the joy of marriage. You have a new feeling toward a person that you thought you couldn’t love any more than you already did. The ‘pressure’ you talked about is you just overthinking that things will change too much. Well, take a breath and relax because nothing will change. If anything, you both will change for the better and together, side by side.” Lily told her piece, his face never changing from a serious expression. He began to smile.

“You’re right. Thank you for the kind and honest words. I really needed that. You are a lovely woman. My name is Jim.” He bowed to Lily.

Lily bowed back. “Tara.”

“I must get back now. Goodnight.” Jim went back into the building. A slow song was beginning to play. Lily watched, and as Jim went inside, Damen came outside.

Great. One thing after another. Hope everything is okay.

Damen walked up to Lily, bowed, then outreached his hand. “May I have this dance?” He smiled at Lily. She took his hand, and they began to dance.

“Damen, where did you go?”

“I took care of the Isabelle situation.”

Damen’s smile turned sly and sneaky. Lily eyed him as they swayed back and forth to the music.
