Previously… for her latest assignment, Vera enters the convent to fill in for Sister Josephine (aka Posey), who’s planning on outing the Loan Some company in a tell-all book. Readers voted for Vera and Cole to volunteer once a month in order to keep Posey quiet.
Posey smiled. “I’ll drop the book deal on one condition.”
“What’s that?” Vera feared that Posey might guilt her into becoming a nun.
“You’re not going to have us murdered, are you?” Cole rubbed his eyes, still waking from slumber.
“You and mister over there have to give back in some way, at least once a month.”
“Ugh. Are you sure you don’t want to just do away with us?” Cole threw his head back down on the pillow.
“No, that’s a good deal,” said Vera. “I like this idea.”
“It’s time Loan Some is held accountable for its actions,” said Posey. “In addition to taking money from the lonely, it’s also going to do some good for free.”
“You do realize that you were going to gain money from the book deal, right?” Vera called Posey out on her own sins.
“I was going to give 10 percent back to the church.”
“Sure,” Cole said sarcastically, muffled into the pillow.
Posey looked at Cole with waning patience. “So, you can all leave now.”
“How can we trust that you’re telling the truth?” Vera still didn’t completely believe Posey. After all, she had two names, two different identities. How could you trust her?
Posey grabbed the Bible from her desk and put her hand on it. “I swear on this. I won’t go through with the book. As long as you two agree to my terms. Volunteer at our food pantry once a month.”
Vera shrugged her shoulders. It was blackmail, but as far as bribery went, it was for a good cause.
Cole and Vera headed to their cars, the Sister Josephine assignment officially over for now (they were scheduled to volunteer next week).
“I parked away from the convent as not to arouse suspicion,” said Vera, standing in front of Cole’s car in the convent parking lot. “But I see you threw discretion to the wind.”
“Sorry about that,” said Cole. “Let me walk you to your car.”
“No, it’s dangerous out here. Rogue nuns and all.”
They walked a little down a path in a wooded area, before finally reaching her car.
“Well, this is me.” Vera placed her bag near the trunk of the car.
“Can I ask you a question?”
“Sure,” she said, without giving Cole much thought, popping the trunk so she could throw her bag in.
“Where would you be happiest: being stuck with Greg. . . or me?”
After tossing her bag in the car, she gave the trunk a slam and looked thoughtfully into Cole’s eyes. Before she could answer, he whisked her into a kiss. Vote below on what will happen next or if reading by email click view poll.
