Heart of Palms by Holly L. Aasen

Heart of Palms is a series involving a wealthy family that is unknowingly manipulated by a palm reader close to the family, who is in actuality only out to achieve her own goals at all costs. She has dedicated her life to a small religious sect that worships Eris, the goddess of chaos, in order to demonstrate the superiority of the religion over common mainstream religions. In order to reach her goals, this family and those associated with them will naively become pawns in her game, altering their lives out of a whirlwind of chaos, danger, and malice. In the previous episode, Veronica spontaneously decided on a surprise visit to see her girls in LA.

Episode 13

Once they reached the pool Veronica recognized the movie director Clyde, lounging among several other people soaking in the sun. He had come home unexpectedly early from work on another movie overseas. The girls had invited a few friends over to the pool who were also working on the movie. Clyde didn’t mind. He normally didn’t entertain parties at his house but he was happy to see a movie cast that got along so well and wanted Lily to feel welcome and at home until the movie wrapped.

Lily reintroduced him to her mother and then over to Thomas, Ella’s new boyfriend. They had been inseparable since first meeting. She introduced a few more people and then strolled to the bar where a young man brought Veronica a Mimosa. Then they parked themselves under an umbrella in a quiet alcove away from the others. Clyde couldn’t help but notice the man who served her drink. He had striking features and abs of steel. Clyde was quite fond of tall, dark and handsome young men.

“I like your style Lily. Your friends really liven up this place. A particularly exceptional choice in the one with the drinks,” he said motioning to the young man.

Lily laughed, “I appreciate your approval but I don’t know him. I assumed he was part of the staff. He just appeared behind the bar and started taking drink orders as if he was the usual bartender here.”

“As much as I love the staff here and how well they care for myself and home, I can’t imagine keeping a bartender on staff. I suppose you don’t know enough about me to know that I never entertain. I’ve never had this many people here before,” he thought as he looked around. “Hmmm, well we will have to find out more about this mystery man.”

Lily took a good look around to see if perhaps he had come with someone. She was fairly certain that she knew everyone and any person they had brought with them. She asked Ella about him and she had the same assumption that he was part of the staff. After asking a few more people, no one seemed to know who he was. Then as they looked for him, they realized he was gone. Clyde called his security guard and asked for the security camera footage. The guard went to pull the footage and realized there were three hours that were unrecorded. Somehow he had entered and left the home and there was no evidence of his presence. Clyde thought this was incredibly intriguing. While he should have been concerned, he was instead still infatuated and not thinking clearly.

Veronica was quite alarmed however and concerned for the girls’ safety.
