Previously…Jade tries unsuccessfully to locate Sebastian’s sister, Sybil Downing. Readers voted that she has completely disappeared.
“Well I’m sure she’ll come back soon,” Jade said to the little girl in the bushes. The girl nodded shyly at Jade and opened her mouth to say more, but then the main door to the house creaked open and the girl scampered away. The butler stepped out, raising his heavy eyebrows at Jade who turned quickly and walked back to her car.
Missing? Jade started typing William White’s number into her phone as she drove out of the Downing estate, then stopped, her fingers hovering over the keypad. Sybil Downing, missing right before she was scheduled to testify against her brother Sebastian. Could the prosecution be hiding her? Doubtful, as she would surely have brought her daughter with her. “We don’t know where she is…” The girl’s voice came floating back to Jade. It seemed as if no one at the Downing house knew Sybil’s whereabouts, which meant she had either left of her own accord without telling anyone, or someone had forced her. And in that case…
Jade thought of William at the diner, asking her to speak with Sybil. Convince her not to testify, he’d implored. Appeal to her sense of compassion and family. Had he meant it? Or had there been some other reason he had wanted her to visit the stable that day, looking for a woman he knew wouldn’t be there? Jade didn’t know what to think. She considered going to Cole at the agency and telling him everything, but she knew this was all in violation of her job contract at Loan Some. She couldn’t talk about it with anyone there.
So she completed the call to William.
He answered on the first ring.
“Jade. I’m so glad to hear from you. How did it go?”
Jade carefully explained that Sybil hadn’t been there, and how she’d gone to the house and learned of the woman’s disappearance.
“What do you think happened,” Jade asked tentatively after recounting her story. There was silence on the other end of the line, then –
“I haven’t a clue, Jade. This is very strange.” William’s voice was full of static. “Please don’t tell anyone else, and I’ll – I’ll see what I can do to figure out where she is. But I suppose if she left of her own accord, this is good for us. Maybe she felt guilty about ruining her brother’s life and decided to go somewhere until this whole crazy trial blows over. That’s what I would have done.”
“But without telling anyone? Even her daughter?” Jade persisted. William sighed, static crackling as he did so.
“I don’t know, Jade. I’ll let you know what I find.”
There was a click and William was gone. Jade looked at her phone for a moment, then shrugged and dropped it back in her purse. She had just decided to go home, order Chinese, and let William take it from here when her phone buzzed again, this time with an unknown number.
Jade knew it would be trouble even before she picked up.
