Episode 4

“When I informed Sebastian that someone would be playing the part of his fiancée,” William said to Jade, “He declared that no one could act as his fiancée without getting to know him as a person.” William paused with a slightly annoyed expression, and Jade smiled – William’s annoyed expression was every bit as cute as his serious one. But her smile faded slightly at William’s next words.

“Sebastian thinks it would be a good idea if you two get to know each other. He wants to arrange several private meetings between the two of you, however I’ve told him that I absolutely need to be present. That is, if you agree to this. It’s not a part of your job. You’re under no obligation whatsoever, and in fact I think it would be best if -” He stopped suddenly, seemed to rethink his words and then continued – “I am leaving it up to you and Cole. If you think meeting with Sebastian would help your performance or be otherwise beneficial, I will set up the meetings. If not, I can handle Sebastian’s disappointment.”

William stopped talking and interlocked his fingers, looking at her expectantly. Celine was on the edge of her seat, and Cole was staring oddly at the table. Jade had no idea what to say. A part of her was intrigued by meeting Sebastian Downing, although her better judgment told her it was probably best to stay away. She didn’t see what she could learn about him that would impact her ability to stare in a loving and devoted manner from a seat in the courtroom. But her curiosity got the better of her.

“I’ll do it,” she said carefully to William. “As long as you’re always there and I can stop the meetings if I feel uncomfortable. And,” – she turned to Cole, who was still staring determinedly at the table – “if you agree, Cole.”

“Of course.” Cole raised his head to look at Jade. “If that’s what you want to do. It’s unusual for a Loan Some case, but I can tell this isn’t going to be a usual case.”

“Excellent.” William stood. “Well I’ll be in touch then, Jade, about scheduling the first meeting. The trial is set to begin next week, so I’ll meet with both of you again beforehand to go over your exact behavior, but it’s pretty straightforward.”

His eyes lingered on Jade for a moment. “Thank you,” he said finally. He shook Cole’s hand and walked briskly out of the office.

There was a silence, broken when they all heard the outer door of the restaurant slam shut. Cole took a deep breath and looked at Jade, who was putting on her coat.

“I think this is a mistake, Jade,” he said quietly.

Surprised, Jade turned to look at him. “You do? Why didn’t you say something before? Now I’ve agreed to it. Besides, it sounds harmless to me. William will be there the whole time, and it seems like Sebastian Downing just wants to exercise his ego a bit. I don’t mind, it could be interesting.”

“Yes…” Cole seemed skeptical. “You may be right. Mr. White will be there, although I’m not entirely comforted by that.”

Jade opened her mouth to ask what he meant, but before she could Cole cut her off.

“It’s up to you, Jade. Just be careful and remember what I said about getting too involved. Especially where Mr. White is concerned.” Vote below on what will happen next or if reading by email click view poll.
