Episode 3

Jade arrived before the restaurant had opened the next morning. The dark, cavernous dining room appeared slightly ominous as she hurried through past the unmoving rows of glass and silver and down the narrow stairs to the Loan Some office. The office was empty except for Cole, who was standing in the far corner talking to a tall, well-dressed black man. Both men were leaning forward and speaking in low voices, and Jade felt as though she was intruding upon a secret meeting. She hovered by the door for a minute until Cole addressed her, raising his voice but keeping his eyes on his companion.

“Good morning Jade,” he said crisply. “Help yourself to coffee and then come sit down.”

It was Cole’s “professional” voice. Jade did as she was told.

Celine hadn’t arrived yet, but Cole introduced Jade to William James White, who shook her hand with a firm grip that exuded warmth, confidence, and overwhelming control. Jade had never really thought about her handshake until that moment, and resolved to work on making it better immediately.

“A pleasure to meet you Jade,” Mr.White was saying. “Cole was just telling me that you’re the best employee he’s got. I very much look forward to working with you.”

Jade met his gaze, and felt a jolt somewhere around her midriff – his eyes were molten chocolate, and framed by the most chiseled, flawless face she’d ever seen. She instantly realized why he was such a successful trial lawyer, and it took a moment for her to stammer out a response. She had barely started with “likewise, Mr. White” when he smiled and interrupted her – “William, please.” William. She nodded mutely.

For the first and likely last time in her life, Jade was thankful to see Celine walk through the door. The “actress” swept into the room in a long coat over what Jade suspected were silk pajama pants, apologizing about oversleeping due to a very late night. When they were all seated at the table with coffee cups in hand, Cole cleared his throat and introduced William again. Celine fluttered her eyelashes; Jade sipped her coffee.

“Thanks Cole,” came the deep voice. “I’m very glad to meet you both. I gather that Cole has told you the basics of the job. I’m here to expand on that, and answer any questions you may have. Let’s start with the case itself.”

Jade tried to pay attention to what William was saying, but her attention kept straying to his perfect stubble-studded cheekbones. She vaguely heard something about Sebastian Downing, the mysterious falling-out with Josiah Carver, and the incriminating meeting between the two right before Carver’s death. She didn’t snap back in until William addressed her directly.

“That’s why it’s so important that Sebastian appears to have people who love and trust him,” William was saying. “The public perception of him up to now has been quite unfavorable, what with his controversial mind control experiments and antisocial, reclusive behavior. Sadly but not unsurprisingly, Sebastian couldn’t produce even one person who would show up to support him. That’s where you come in.”

“Jade,” he began, “as you know you’ll be playing Sebastian’s fiancée. I explained the details to Cole when I first contacted Loan Some, however there’s something that I learned this afternoon that I think you should know before we go any further.” Vote below on what will happen next or if reading by email click view poll.
