Previously… Amber wants Val to return home but Val has been called back to work.
It had been a restless night for Val. She felt a bit “sluggish” as she started down the street towards the diner. She knew Amber wanted her to return to her home planet last night. Sure Earth was a fascinating little place, so much different from her home. But Earth wasn’t home. The thing was, she felt she at least owed Zeke, Carmen, Lucy and Marcus a goodbye. After all, they all treated her so well. Val was convinced she made the right decision. So convinced, she touched her ear to activate her communication device.
“About time!” Amber blurted. “I don’t believe you turned me off!”
“I got tired of you complaining about my choice to stay. Trust me it’s just for one more day.”
“Val, I get it. There’s something about the allure of a primitive world that can get to a scientist. I don’t really know why. Maybe it’s some sort of pheromone attraction from the primitives…”
“They are not primitive!” Val thought stronger.
“They haven’t even come close to figuring out teleporting yet. They reproduce manually. They pollute their own planet. They even still have taxes!”
Val turned off her communicator again just as she entered the diner. It was already pretty busy. Val got right to work and the morning seemed to fly by. And just like the day before, she enjoyed working side by side with Carmen and Lucy. She found physical work a nice change from her lab routine. Before Val knew it the lunch shift was upon them. Sure enough Ryan came walking in through the door and went right to the counter. Val stared at the door for a second or two more. Carmen walked up to Val and nudged her gently.
“Looking for someone else to come through that door?” she said playfully.
Val popped back to the moment. She shook her head. “Ah, no. It’s just so lovely outside. I was admiring.”
Carmen smiled at her teasingly. “Uh-huh… ”
“I’m really NOT looking for anyone,” Val said taking a menu and heading towards Ryan. Carmen shook her head as Val walked away. “Well she’s got it bad.”
“Oh hi,” Ryan said as Val handed him a menu.
“Hello, I’ll take your order when you are ready…” Val said, a bit colder than she was planning.
Ryan dropped his head and looked away from her. “Sorry, about yesterday,” he said meekly. “I really wanted to impress you but sometimes I get too impressed with myself. My shrink says I need to work on that.”
Val smiled and touched him gently on the shoulder. “Actually, it’s a good sign you recognize the problem.” She looked him in the eyes cutting him off before he could say anything else. “I’ll be back for your order in a minute or two…”
Val noticed a slim older gentlemen sitting alone at one of the tables his gaze locked on at an older woman who sat alone at the table next to him. Val could sense that they were both lonely. They both wanted to talk to each other but they were too shy or too out of practice to actually initiate a conversation.
Lucy noticed Val watching the pair and leaned over to Val’s ear, “They both have been coming here for months. Almost everyday. And almost everyday they sit at the same tables, look at each other when the other isn’t looking but never speak. They are so cute but I wish he would get brave enough to just sit with her.”
Val was touched by the sweetness of the story. And both of their auras read as compatible. “Well maybe I can help him with a little courage. I mean, it’s obvious they do like each other. It’s not totally meddling. Just a small push”, Val thought to herself. “Or maybe I am getting too sentimental and attached to this place”, she said out loud to no one. Val tilted her head and observed the pair a moment longer, deciding… Vote below or enter your own comments about what happens next. If reading in email click Take our Poll or Comments.
