Episode 17

Val gazed into Marcus’ eyes. They were open wide and focused on her eyes. He seemed really sincere.

“I’m promise you, it’s a kick,” he said excitedly. “It’s a place I drop by when I need a lift.” He motioned with his head. “It’s only a little out of the way….” He put a hand over his heart. “If it doesn’t make you smile I promise I will never ask you to do anything again.” He offered her his arm.

Val exhaled. She had read Earth lawyers were good at making their points. She now knew this was true. It was nice to have experience to back up her book (well… computer) knowledge. She linked her arm in his. “Okay, let’s see this wonderful place.”

Marcus started gently escorting Val down the street. Val had to increase her pace to keep up with him. “You’ll love it!” he said with a smile. His smile straightened a bit as he thought of something, “at least I think you will.” He nodded, a hint of that smile appeared on his face again. “Yes, I know you’ll like it.”

Val found his uneasy confidence interesting, much different than what she was used to from the calm but steady males on her planet. Val noticed that there was a crowd gathered up ahead. They were standing in front of the picture window of a small building.

Marcus pointed at the crowd. “I should have known the place would be crowded.” His voice fell a level. “Bummer, I really want you to see this. It’s kind of silly, but it always makes me feel better…”

Val wanted to see this but more importantly she didn’t like seeing Marcus disappointed. She concentrated on the crowd gathered in front of the window she thought, You’ve seen enough and you feel content, now it’s time to let others to see!

The crowd slowly but surely pulled away from the window. Marcus’ eyes popped open. He gently tugged Val towards a spot in the middle before a new crowd could fill in. They reached the window and Val’s eyes widened with appreciation. It was a pizza place called Papa’s Pizza. There in middle were two older men dressed in white, tossing dough high above their heads, spinning it and then tossing it back and forth between one another. As they played catch with the dough it slowly started to expand outwards. All the while the two men were singing loudly in Italian. Opera. And they were quite good.

“They make pizza the old fashion way here… The really old fashioned way and it’s delicious…”

“I’ve always wanted to try pizza!” Val said.

“Wait? You’ve never had pizza? You must really be an alien…”

Val scoffed. “I meant big city pizza! I’m not from Mars!” She joked. “It’s amazing this place is so close to my apartment yet I had no idea it existed.”

“That’s the wonderful thing about this city, you never know what you might find just around the corner!” Marcus beamed. “Everyday can be a new exciting experience.”

Just then the two men turned their attention to Val and began serenading her. She knew from her studies it was a beautiful song about two lovers that met by chance on a starry night. Her cheeks burned a little from the attention but she nodded her head in appreciation. She could feel herself grinning from ear to ear.

When the men finished a crowd had re-gathered and everyone applauded.

As excited as Val was, she felt herself growing even more tired quickly. She looked up at Marcus, ‘that was magnificent. Thank you so much for showing me. It really was a great way to end an…interesting day.”

“I’m glad I could help”, Marcus offered his arm again and they continued down the street with Val leading this time.

“I am definitely going to have to go back and try that pizza”.

Before she knew it they were in front of her stoop. “Thank you again Marcus. And thank you for seeing me home safely.”

“Well it was the least I could do after knocking you down. I hope I see you tomorrow…” Marcus suddenly got nervous, “That is, I mean, at the diner. I go everyday for lunch. Well most everyday…”

Val smiled, “I will be there”.

An idea popped into Val’s head just as Amber began barking into the earpiece again. Amber wanted an update on when Val was returning to the planet but Val wasn’t so sure she was ready to go yet. And she thought maybe of asking Marcus to join her at the pizza place the next day. He seemed like he could be a good friend, and Val felt like she needed one right now. But there was Amber… Vote below or enter your own comments about what happens next. If reading in email click Take our Poll or Comments.
