Previously… Val’s date with Ryan did not go smoothly and now he wants a second chance.
“Come on Val, give me another chance,” Ryan pleaded with his eyes as much as his words.
“What’s going on? Report?” Amber demanded mentally. “I do not appreciate being this much out of the loop!”
Val ignored Amber. She wanted to ignore Ryan too, but he reached out and touched her lightly on the shoulder. “Please…” he said to her. “Let me buy you dinner at least. You have to eat don’t you?”
Val sighed. “Fine.”
Ryan’s face instantly switched from one of desperation to one of total joy. “Great, great!” He said, ushering her into the restaurant part of the building. “You’ll love the food here. It’s tasty and nutritious!”
Ryan and Val sat at a nice little corner table. A waiter, a guy in shorts a t-shirt and holding a couple of menus walked over to them. He handed them the menus. “Can I get you anything to drink?” he asked. “We have a number of fine fresh juices…”
“Just water for me,” Val said.
Ryan looked at her. “Are you sure? They have a mango papaya blend that’s to die for!”
“Sure I’ll try that…” Val said.
Ryan looked up at the waiter and smiled. “Make that two!”
The waiter smiled and walked off.
Val eyed her menu. “The hamburger looks good….”
Ryan shook his head. “I don’t eat red meat. It’s death.”
“Oh, so you are against the killing of animals as food?” Val asked.
Ryan shook his head again. “Nah, it’s just that red meat is bad for the body.”
“Don’t some people claim that humans are carnivores?” Val asked.
Ryan shrugged. “No idea… I don’t like the way red meat makes me feel so groggy….” He flexed his muscles so Val could clearly see them. “I much prefer lean chicken and fish.”
Val ordered the hamburger and really enjoyed it. The juice, not so much but she drank it anyway. As the evening progressed, Val sat there taking in all of what Ryan had to say. After all she was a social scientist, she felt it was her job to collect as many data as she could. Ryan liked to work out a lot. He had been studying to be an architect but put that on hold at least for now because he found school to be confining. He loved working outside with his hands. Someday, maybe he’d go back to school when he was ready. For now, though he was happy building other people’s buildings. Though Val thought she detected a trace of sorrow in his voice when he mentioned that.
“So how’s it going?” Amber prodded again. “Is this human male worth potentially sharing DNA with?”
Val ignored Amber again. But the question she posed was an interesting one. Ryan certainly was pleasing to the eyes. He wasn’t a bad guy. He was different from the males on her planet. But Val was pretty certain she had learned all she needed to know about him. At least for now.
“Would you like some dessert?” Ryan asked her.
“No, no thank you,” Val told him. “It’s been a long day. My first day on the new job…” She stopped before adding this was her first date with a male. “If you don’t mind I’d like to pay my share of the bill and go home…”
Ryan sunk back into his chair. “Please let me pay…. It’s the least I can do after literally leaving you hanging and dominating the conversation….”
Val smiled at him. “I appreciate that. And I enjoyed the conversation. I learned a lot.”
Val stood up.
“Can I walk you home?” Ryan asked, with an eyebrow raised.
Val shook her head. “I’ll see you again at the diner…” For a moment, she considered mentally convincing Ryan to drop the idea of walking her home. But he was already scanning the restaurant for somebody else to talk to.
Val walked down the street. Trying to analyze what had just happened. Her first “date” certainly didn’t go well.
“Report!” Amber mentally ordered.
Val groaned. She had most likely put off Amber long enough. Just because she didn’t really have anything positive to report didn’t mean she didn’t have anything to report. Only she had been hoping to give Amber something better.
She turned the corner head down, in a hurry to just get home.
“Can I have just a moment to gather my thoughts and…”, BAM! She walked headfirst into a man, knocking herself to the ground. “Great”, Val thought.
“We have to stop meeting like this”. Val knew that voice. She looked up and saw Marcus standing above her extending his hand to help her up. Vote below or enter your own comments about what happens next. If reading in email click Take our Poll or Comments.
