Episode 12

Roxy drove straight to The Mill. She had bid Flora a hurried goodbye, with promises not to say a word to anybody about their conversation except her “sister.” As she drove past the road that led to Jasper’s shop, Roxy slowed down. Technically, she was investigating Calvin for Jasper, and should update him on this development. But something made her pause – she should wait, she decided, make absolutely sure she’d found the link between the organization, Juliette’s parents, and the missing jewels first. And if she had, would she go to Jasper then? Jasper was a dangerous person to cross, but she’d done plenty of dangerous things before. And she was so close to finding those jewels herself! Roxy sped up, turning instead towards the restaurant.

As she pulled up, she could see Dinah setting up for dinner through the enormous old factory windows. Calvin was nowhere to be seen, which meant that he was in his office, getting paperwork done in the lull before the dinner rush. Perfect. Roxy parked and headed in through the back service entrance. She knocked on Calvin’s door, not at all sure what she was going to say. When it opened a crack, Calvin’s surprised expression greeted her through his tangled black beard.

“Roxy!” He opened the door further. “You’re not working tonight, are you?”

“No.” Roxy walked in and gently closed the door behind her. “This isn’t about work. I, um, need to talk to you about something else.” She crossed the tiny office and perched on the arm of Calvin’s old worn couch. “Do you have a minute?”

“Of course.” Calvin looked concerned. For a fleeting moment, Roxy thought about her life in Anchester Falls – living with Juliette, those fun late nights on the dock with Cal and Dinah, her steady job at the restaurant. She was about to give it all up. She swallowed.

“I want to know why…why you’re still here. In Anchester Falls. If you have the jewels, and you must, you could have left town right after killing Anne and Horace.” She trailed off. Calvin was looking at her with a mixture of anger and astonishment. For a moment, he pulled at his beard, saying nothing. Then finally –

“Have you spoken to my ex-wife?”

It wasn’t the response Roxy had been expecting. She nodded.

Calvin sighed. Then – “Are you part of the organization?”

This time, Roxy shook her head. “No. I used to be. Kind of. It’s a long story…but I’m not anymore.”

“Ok.” Calvin looked very tired. “Well, first of all, I didn’t kill Anne and Horace, and I definitely don’t have any jewels. I can’t tell you any more, but if you’re smart you’ll stay away from all this. Those jewels are cursed.”

Roxy looked at Calvin. She hadn’t expected him to deny everything. She would have assumed he was lying, but something in his face made her want to believe him.

“But,” Roxy pressed, “if you didn’t kill them, there must be another member of the organization in Anchester Falls! Do you know who it is?”

Calvin stood up. “I think you should leave, Roxy. You say you’re no longer with the organization – then this is really none of your concern. Trust me, you’ll be far better off. And don’t -” He paused. “Don’t speak to Flora again.”

With that, he closed the door in her face. She heard him lock it behind her. Vote below on what will happen next or if reading in email click Take our Poll.
