Previously… Greg finally notices Vera and thinks she’s a call girl.
“I knew it,” Greg said, biting his lip in anger.
“Knew what?” Vera said in almost a whisper.
“You’re a call girl. And this guy here—” He threw his hands up in the direction of Cole. “Is your pimp. You think I was born yesterday?”
“Whoah,” said Cole. “You have the wrong idea here. I’m no pimp.”
And for the third time that evening, a man walked out angrily on Vera. Vera and Cole just stared at each other in shock.
“Well, go after him,” he said. “My reputation’s on the line, too. As cool as being called ‘a pimp’ sounds.”
Vera elbowed her way through the crowd, following Greg, who seemed to be making a beeline for the exit. She cornered him in an empty hallway filled with lockers, located by the men’s bathroom.
“I’m not a call girl,” she said, causing Greg to turn around. “I’m working here tonight.”
“You with the karaoke people?” Greg’s face softened, growing somewhat serious.
“No. I work for a company that loans out fake friends for special occasions. It’s called Loan Some.”
He squinted his eyes in confusion, looking side to side before committing to her face. “What?”
“I didn’t want to tell you because one, it’s weird, and two, I met you at an assignment, which is against the rules.”
Greg stared at her, his face a look of quizzical shock. “Well, screw the rules. I wish you would have told me anyway.”
“And I wish you would have told me—” she said, blowing blond strands from her wig out of her face. “That you’re seeing someone else.”
“I’m not seeing someone else.”
“Who was that pretty blonde that came in with you?”
“My sister. When I told her my girlfriend was too busy for me, she offered to go with me.”
Oh. Vera felt about as small as Milwaukee Joe’s few strands of hair left on his head.
“I’m sorry. I had this assignment,” she said. “I was hired as a date here.”
And just then, Milwaukee Joe walked out of the men’s bathroom.
“You were hired as a date here? With Vulva?” He let out another wheezy laugh, like someone letting the air escape from a balloon. “Isn’t this rich? Vulva called a hooker. I gotta tell everyone.” Then, he made a run toward the gymnasium.
“Oh, crap,” Vera sighed. The one person who shouldn’t be hearing this conversation had overheard. And now he thought Austin had hired Vera as a hooker.
“What?” Greg watched him make a run for it.
“I have to go fix this. I’m sorry. We’ll finish discussing this.”
Vera turned and sprinted after Milwaukee Joe, and it was only now in life that she wished there were hall monitors to stop both of them from running in the halls.
He stopped when he got to the entrance of the gymnasium, slyly adjusting his hair before throwing his hands up in the air and saying, “Guys, wait until you hear this!”
