We left off in Heart of Palms: A Novella with Cole waking from his coma. The kidnappers had planted a bug in a “Get Well” planter in his hospital room knowing that Ella would question him about the location of the baby. All they had to do was wait and listen. Ella would do their work for them and lead them right to the baby they needed to bring back to their boss.
Dr. Michaels sat in the small, cheap motel room shocked by what he had just done. He had checked into the first motel he saw as he made his getaway in order to hide. He stared down at this little baby boy that he had just taken, sleeping quietly in his arms. He had no plan and wondered what to do next. Once he had found the baby at the vineyard in a small town in upper Michigan, he panicked. Upon arriving, he had walked up to the front porch and there he saw the baby, Cole’s baby, sleeping quietly in a bassinet next to his mother who was also on the porch napping in a rocking chair. He had thought impulsively to himself..don’t ask questions, don’t cause any alarm, just grab the baby and run. He figured he would talk to Jack later to figure out what to do. All he knew now was that he needed the baby to save Cole’s life and it wouldn’t help anyone to try to get explanations from the mother. It seemed like the right thing to do at the time. But now, he didn’t know what to do next except wait for Jack to call.
Meanwhile, back at the hospital Cole was awake but not yet coherent enough to speak. He was under 24-hour surveillance from security and Ella was anxious for him to be able to talk. She had hoped to speak with him soon to try to help him but there was no telling how long it would take. As she walked back to her office, her phone rang. It was Dr. Michaels, “Ella, have you spoken to Jack?”
“No, I haven’t heard from him in several days. Cole is awake now though he isn’t speaking yet. Are you coming to the hospital today?” she asked.
“I won’t be there today but I need to speak with Jack as soon as possible. If you hear from him, you must have him contact me immediately,” he explained just as the baby let out a scream at the top of his lungs.
“What was that?” Ella wondered as she listened to the crying baby.
“Nothing, I’m…I’m just at the mall. Standing next to a hungry baby,” he stammered. “I gotta go. Keep in touch.”
As he hurried off the phone, he realized he was going to have to find some food for this baby. And then probably some diapers and other supplies but he was worried about being seen. He looked up some nearby shopping options and as he was deciding, where to go there was a knock at the door. Vote below on what will happen next or if reading in email click Take our Poll.
