When Angelique hit the road with her infant, expecting Robbie to come and pick them up, she instead is met on the road by the sheriff. According to the readers, during the confrontation between Angelique and the sheriff, the baby continued screaming and Angelique aimed her gun at the sheriff.
Angelique had stopped and squatted down to get the baby a bottle. She set the backpack on the ground in front of her. When the sheriff stopped his car along the edge of the road, she began cursing. The baby began howling as if his world was about to end, and given the standoff between Angelique and the sheriff, that might turn out to be the case. Angelique made no effort to comfort him. Hand on the gun in her backpack; she looked up at the sheriff who held handcuffs in his hand.
“You want to handcuff the baby too?” she taunted over the screams of the baby.
“What are you doing out here with that baby? How you gonna take care of him out here on the highway? Listen to him.”
“He’s coming for us.”
“He, who? Where is he?”
“He will be here to pick us up.”
“And what if he doesn’t show up? What are you gonna do then? Out here on the highway in the sun. Looks like child abuse to me. You’re breaking her heart, you know. She raised five kids on her own and now she thinks she has to take care of every stray that wanders in. And then what do you do when she gets used to having a baby around? You take off chasin’ sex with some boy that could care less about you and probably doesn’t even know you have a baby.” The sheriff was shouting to be heard over the screams that would not stop.
Angelique’s face flushed. “It’s my baby.” She started shushing the baby strapped to her chest. He only screamed louder.
“Well young lady, you just made it my business. Reason enough to call Child Services.”
“You can’t do that. I’m just taking my baby for a walk.”
“Needed to steal money from her and her gun to take a walk? Didn’t think I knew about that, did you?”
Angelique flushed again and turned away reaching further into her backpack.
“Don’t think you are going to shoot me with her gun either.”
“I’m just getting a bottle. He needs a bottle.”
“Sure as hell needs something with all that screaming. Kick that backpack over here and I will take the gun out first or I am going to take that goddamned howler and cuff you next.”
Instead, Angelique squared off in front of the sheriff with gun in hand.
“Trigger happy, you already shot your aunt. I know your story.”
“Don’t think I won’t!” The baby’s shrieked at a new level.
