In the midst of wondering who had called the cell phone Chuck had given her for emergencies, Angelique completely forgot to contact Robbie, a man she had met online, and warn him not to come near Cynthia Ann’s house. Readers voted that Robbie, looking for Angelique, pulled up that evening in Cynthia Ann’s driveway in a truck with a gun rack and a barking dog in the back.
While rocking the baby that had fallen asleep in her lap after being fed, Angelique had been watching a rerun of Teen Mom 2. The episode included a long argument with a couple where a possible prison sentence loomed for the baby’s father who had been involved in a traffic accident. Angelique said to Cynthia Ann, “Maybe Chuck was in an accident. Maybe he has amnesia and that’s why he didn’t come back.”
“And maybe the moon fell out of the sky last night. I don’t know why you watch that trash,” Cynthia Ann commented.
“Maybe it makes me feel like I’m not the only one,” Angelique replied.
Headlights flashed through the living room bay window as a truck swung into the long driveway in front of the house. Cynthia Ann rose from her seat to take a look.
“That’s not one of my clients. In fact, it’s not anyone I recognize,” Cynthia Ann said as she looked out the window, the sky reddening with the setting sun, its light softening the lines of her face, but only for a moment. When she saw a young man getting out of the truck and heading towards the house, Cynthia Ann suspected this was exactly the scene she had worried about, with Angelique emailing men.
“Ye Gods, is there no end to the chaos you create, child?”
The next thing Angelique knew, Cynthia Ann had a shotgun in her hands and was charging out the front door. Suddenly Angelique flashed on the email conversations she had had with Robbie and remembered that she had not warned him about Cynthia Ann. “Fuck,” she said. “It was the phone call that made me forget.”
Although she had been distracted and daydreaming all day, Angelique bolted up out of the rocking chair and startled the baby awake. “Oh stop that,” she said as she quickly repositioned the crying baby on her shoulder. Running out the door, she was shouting “No…ooo…ooo.”
She heard an argument and a dog barking.
“Jesus, lady, it’s Florida. You can find a gun rack and a pointer in just about every other truck going down the road. I just came to see Angelique.” Vote below on what will happen next or if reading in email click Take our Poll.
