Episode 6

I feel the attacker pressing my mind, probing it.  It is as if millions of tiny surgical knives are trying to cut their way into my subconscious.  I imagine my mind as a steel safe with thick walls: impenetrable.  Nothing gets in or out, unless I will it to.  The attack still continues, pressing, pushing, looking for a chink in my mental armor.

I lean back in my chair calmly.  Putting my arms behind my head to show how relaxed I am, I smile.  I look at my four fellow special people, Bob, Tom, Cindy and Lily, trying to decipher which one of them is probing me.

“Today’s trip was eventful and a little draining,” I admit.  “That is why I am here now.  I needed both food and the comfort of my friends,” I say, looking directly at Lily.  Not only was she the one to ask me the question but she was also the one I deemed most likely to try to probe me.

Cindy leans forward and puts her hand over my hand.  “Yes, we are here for you, Alana,” she says earnestly.  “Your powers and your ability, must place a great burden on you.”

I turn to Cindy and smile.  “Thank you for your concern, but it is nothing I can’t handle.”

Could this be a faint, a fake by Cindy?  Could she be the one probing me?   I don’t believe so, still I can’t be certain.  Not yet at least.

My attacker changes their strategy.  Instead of blasting my mind from every conceivable angle they try a concentrated attack.  They combine all the little mental knives that were trying to cut and dice into one giant attack.  The initial attack was just a probe, looking for weak spots.  They think they found one so now they are concentrating all their energy on that spot to drill and bore their way into my mind.

They are being foolish if they think I really have an opening.  That was a fake on my part to get them to expend more energy in their attack.  I want to weaken them.

“Yes, Alana, we are all here for you,” Tom says.  He turns to Bob and Lily.  “Right guys?”

Bob nods.  “Sure, I guess,” he mumbles.  “I just want what’s best,” he says slowly.  “I know what it’s like to be different, to be shunned just for being different.”  He stops for a moment, pulls out a knife and cuts a slice of cheese.  He eats the cheese off of the knife then says, “All I want to do is help.” He sighs and shakes his head.  “Yet some people out in the world just don’t get it.”

“That’s why we are here Bob,” Cindy says earnestly.  “To learn how to use our abilities wisely.  So people won’t be scared of us.”

“Yes,” Tom adds.  “Plus the facility is forming some focus groups to help learn the best way to tell the world about us.”

Lily sneers.  “Oh please, Tom, tell us more about how they are trying to unveil us to the world in a soft user-friendly manner. I have heard that story for years. They still haven’t come up with a way to do it.”  She shakes her head and snickers.  “

“If you believe that’s true why do you stay here?” Tom asks.

Lily leans towards him.  “Cause it’s a sweet deal.  No rent, no expense, they give us what we want. Besides, according to them, the outside world is dangerous for special people like us. ”

Meanwhile the attack on my mind continues.  The attacker has shifted tactics again though.  Since the direct approach failed they are now trying smaller, wisp like attacks.   Their strikes are fast and crisp as they seek to slip in through a crack in my defenses.  There are no cracks.  Each attack is repelled.

I notice a few beads of sweat forming on Lily’s forehead.

“Why are you here, Alana?” Cindy asks sincerely.

“It is all I know,” I say lowering my head.  “I hope while here I can learn how to harness and control my power.”

“Plus, she is hot for Jason,” Lily says.

I turn to Lily and lock eyes with her.  “Jason is a friend,” I tell her.

My words make Lily roll her eyes.

I still feel the pressure of someone probing me mentally. It begins to hurt. I give up.  It’s time to strike back.  I take all that mental energy that’s been pounding at me trying to pierce me and gather it in my mind.  I use my mind to shape it into a ball, a giant glowing ball.  I then add my own mental essence to this ball making it pulsate and vibrate.  I deflect the ball back towards the source of the attack that was coming at me.

Lily darts back in her chair.  Figures she was the one. She puts her hands up to her eyes and grimaces in pain.

“What’s wrong, Lily?” Tom answers.

“Nothing,” Lily says still holding her hands to her head.  “Nothing, just a migraine.”

I stand up from the table.  “While I appreciate the company my friends,” I stare at Lily.  “It’s been a long day.”
