Quantum Voyeur

chapter 2In the previous episode, readers voted that Alana is ready.

Episode 2

I float in my tank just to keep Mr. Cash in suspense for a while longer.  I smile at him.  I float a little more.  I notice from his change of expression he is getting frustrated.  I glance over at Jason and he has a smile on his face. Seeing Jason always comforts me, I feel I am not completely alone. I think Jason likes me. Moreover, I believe he likes me for me, not for what I can do.

“Please bring in my guests.   My fellow travelers. I am ready. ”

Dr. Conners has an anxious grin on his face.  He turns to one of the armed guards by the door.  There are always armed guards around.  It is a fact of life here.  I don’t like it but I am getting used to it.

“Bring in Alana’s fellow travelers,” Dr. Conners tells one of the guards.

I watch as the guard turns and leaves.  I look at the door with anticipation.  I am anxious to see those who will be traveling with me.  The guard leads my fellow voyeurs, our clients into the room.  There are two men, one older with a white beard, the other younger and slim.  There are two women, one tall with her hair in a bun and a stern look on her face, one short with short hair, she looks nervous.   They are all dressed in special travel suits.

I am not sure which ones are the professors from Berkley.  I am not sure which ones are the FAA officials.  It doesn’t matter to me.  It doesn’t change my job, my mission.  I am supposed to guide them, not psychoanalyze them. I can’t help but to want to understand them a little. Do they want to gain access to the past so they can understand the future better? Know?  It’s the nature of humans to want to understand human nature.

The four travelers look in wonder at me floating in my hyperbolic tank.  One of them, the short woman, even lets her jaw drop open.   As they approach the tank, Dr. Conners gives his welcome speech.

“Greetings, I am Doctor Jeffery Conners,” he says with a smile.  He points to Mr. Cash.  “I’m sure you all know my boss, our founder and benefactor Mr. Robert Cash.”

The four travelers bob their heads in polite agreement.  They each give smiles of acknowledgement.

Dr. Conners turns towards me.  The four look at me as if I am an exhibition in an aquarium.

“And this, this is Alana.  Alana has the wonderful gift of astral projection.  She is able to transport herself through time and space.”

The four travelers look at me with a mix of curiosity and fear.  I can sense their thoughts their feelings.

Is it true?  Can she really do that?

How did she develop these abilities?

They are about to see that I can, though I can only go as far back in time to the day I was born.  It’s one of my limitations.  Not sure if it is one I put on myself or it is one time puts on me…. I have yet to figure this out…

“Can she speak?” one of the women, the short one asks, her hands shaking slightly.

I smile.  “I can hear, I can talk, feel and time travel… Trust me this will be an experience like no other…”

Mr. Cash gives me a look; he doesn’t like me to speak too much. Besides, now it’s time for his part of the speech.  I am sure he and Dr. Connors practice this when nobody is around.  “We have trained Alana to time travel and share her abilities with others.  She can take your minds in the voyage with her.”  He points to the chairs connected to my tank.  “Now, sit please.  You are about to have the most amazing experience of your lives.”

The four travelers look up at me.  They look down at the chairs.  They are not sure if what they have heard is true.  They are skeptical.  I sense stray thoughts.

Is this a trick?  Is this an illusion?  Are we being hypnotized?

“I assure you all this is real,” I say in my most reassuring voice.  “I can see the universal strings that hold all matter together.  I can move myself and my guests through those strings to certain places in time.  I am your guide.  You will be able to see, to hear, to even smell the events.  You just can’t touch, because while you are there you are not really physically there.  Just your minds have traveled there through my mind…”

“Fascinating,” one of the men, the one with beard, says.

Jason stands up from his monitor.  He points to the four swivel chairs.  “Please sit and I will hook you up.”  He shows them a head brace with electrodes running through it.  “I assure you this may not look stylish but it is the latest in high-tech head-gear.”

“While you will be actually sitting outside the tank the entire time, it may feel like you are inside the tank with Alana,” Dr. Conners says.  “It is part of the experience.”

The two men and the tall woman sit in their seats.  They are anxious, but in a mostly good way.  The forth traveler the short woman looks at the empty chair.  She looks up at me.   “What about you?  Can you change things?”

“I too only observe,” I tell her, answering without really answering.  Truthfully, I’m not sure if I can change these events.  I’m not sure I want to find out.

The woman backs away from her chair, nervous, shaky.  “No, this is too unnatural,” she says.

This was an unexpected occurrence.  I had been planning on four fellow travelers.  This woman’s leaving could affect my travel. But if she is scared I wonder if I would be better off just letting her go. Does Alana convince her to stay or let her go? Please return to the top of the page to vote!
