Quantum Voyeur

Quantum-Voyeur-blkbdr-2Episode 1

I float here and wait.  Suspended in a containment chamber. I feel my mind is reaching out to infinity.

They found me, they use me, but they don’t understand me.  I am like them, but different.

I cooperate; I do what they tell me.  Time to wake up, Alana.  Time to exercise, Alana.  Time for social interaction, Alana.  Time to sleep, Alana.  Time to travel through time Alana. Why do I do this for them?  I am trying to understand myself, as much as they try to understand me. I know I am different. Today I know is a special day.

It is time for my work, my work for them. I float here in my hyperbolic solution and wait.  This special tank allows me to relax and enter a hypnotic state, enhancing my abilities.  For now, I wait for our next clients.  I see four chairs hooked up to my chamber. That means four guests, four fellow travelers.  When traveling through time, they tell me only to look, not to touch anything, because to touch is to change destinies.  I don’t know if I can touch or if I can change things.  Even if I can, I don’t know if I want too.

Jason Bray walks into the room.  He sits at the monitor connected to my chamber.  He smiles at me.

“How are you doing, Alana?”

My first reaction was to say, I’m floating in a sensory deprivation chamber like a big high tech angel fish.  I’m about to take four total strangers on an intimate journey back in time to witness something horrible.  Something I must witness but can’t change. But I know Jason is a good man and means well.  He’s always been extra kind to me.  I let the remark slide.  I give him a smile.

“I am as good as can be expected, Jason.  Thank you for asking.”

Dr. Conners and Mr. Cash come into the travel area.  Mr. Cash is a cold hard man with a stern face and a fake head of hair.  He acts as if he owns the place.  He does.  But he does not own me.  He should not forget that.  I have never met a man with a more fitting name.

Dr. Conners is a good man a kind man with weary eyes.  He believes he is helping me for the good of the world.  I hope he is right.

Dr. Conners looks up to me.  “Are you ready, Alana?”

Mr. Cash glares at him.  “Of course she’s ready.  She’s always ready.”

I do not answer.  Sometimes no words speak loudest.  This is not one of those times.  I just don’t feel like talking.

Dr. Conners taps on the glass of my chamber as though I am a fish.  “This is going to be an interesting group.  A couple of psychologists from Berkley, and a couple of officials from the FAA.  You’ll be taking them to flight 3131, a small commuter plane that went down last week between Buffalo and Cleveland…”

“I read the briefing,” I tell the good doctor.

“Yes of course you did,” he said with a smile.  “You are always prepared.  Just so you know, the professors are doing a study on fear, and how humans react.  The FAA people are hoping to learn what went wrong, to prevent it from happening again.”

“I understand,” I tell him.

“So it’s all good,” Mr. Cash says to me and gives a not so subtle wink. I hate when he does that.

“I would not say it is good,” Mr. Cash, I said bluntly as I floated on the top of the tank.  “I am going to witness people die. That is not good.  That is never good. Not only that, but I am also going to be traveling through time and space with four other souls who will witness this terrible event, too.”

Mr. Cash took a step back from my tank. “Yes, of course.  It is a terrible loss of life. But you my dear, you are doing a wondrous thing.  Your gift is amazing.  Like none other we have ever found.  You should be proud.”

I nodded.  “I am proud, but that does not mean what I do is good…”

Mr. Cash cleared his throat.  He was the type of man who was not accustomed to people arguing with him.  But he had to know I was not like other people.  “What I am trying to say is, are you ready, Alana?”   Is Alana ready? Please return to the top of the page to vote!

  1. Its an interesting plot with lots of potential. The title is also appealing. I found the main characters name, Alena to be a little too close to Elena to b fully convince me this was a “real” character, though as the narrative continues she will no doubt become more credible.

  2. Off to a good & interesting start! As I said before, I hope to also see more episodes of Kiss Them Deadly. I like the writing style in both.
